It must be Derby week here in Naden Harbour because the fish have certainly arrived.  Keen anglers will be here Friday for QCL's 6th Annual Kingfisher Derby, a catch & release weekend that sees participants hoping to send back the largest Chinook for the $50000 grand prize.  This year we're introducing the QCL Fishing Challenge over the same weekend which offers prize money for both released and kept fish.  The key for both derbies is that they're weighted rods only, no downriggers.
This week we've seen a lot of big fish show up with several 50 lb-plus Tyees landed.  Doug Evasiuk joined the Kingfisher Club with a 60 pound beauty on Tuesday while John Klimkeiwicz released a big Spring which taped out at 42 pounds.  Wednesday saw 4 new members for the 50 Pounder Club with Alan Schill and Chris Rule each boating even 50's.  Joel Gonzales turned back a 52 lb. beauty with guide Kevin Clough while Scott Falcone and guide Dave Eng released a perfect 54 pounder.  Fantastic fishing guys and thanks especially for letting those big fish ones go!  Lots of Tyees in the mix with some great Coho fishing has made for an exciting month so far.  The weekend weather is calling for moderate southwesterlies with showers so it's real fishing weather coming up!  The tides will be moderate with swings of only about 7 feet each day.  Look forward to reports on the derbies' results!
