August 16th Report Posted 16 Aug 2008 IN: General BY QCL
![]() QCL guests continue to enjoy some of the best fishing of the season with strong catches in all species. Tyee-class Chinooks are being taken throughout the grounds with Cape Edenshaw, Parker and Green Points still the favoured destinations. Fishing off the kelp beds at depths of 35 - 50 feet with herring or anchovies is still the most productive tactic. The Coho are in thick right now and we're seeing the larger fish we expect in August with 10 pound averages and good numbers of 12-16 pounders boated daily. These big Silvers are truly the princes of the salmon, providing some of the most exciting angling to be found anywhere. They're being found at all depths throughout the fishing grounds but the top half of the 100 foot depth seems to hold the bulk of the fish. Halibut catches are stellar as well these days with lots of nice chickens coming in and a few 35 - 45 pounders taken each trip. The tides are peaking Monday so we'll see moderating tidal action through the upcoming week and longer slack periods. The weather forecast is calling for southeasterlies to return this week so we won't expect to see the sun for a few days again! |
