August 19th Report Posted 19 Aug 2009 IN: General BY QCL
![]() QCL guests are enjoying beautiful weather and have been well distributed over the fishing grounds as a result. Many boats continue to work the favourite spots off Birds 1 and 2 in search of big Chinooks which are harder to find right now. The bulk of the fish are further offshore and those anglers fishing in waters 150 - 250 feet deep are finding nice Coho from the surface down to about 60 feet. Some boats have found Chinook salmon in these deeper waters as well but Parker Point & Bird 1 are still proving to be most productive. As more anglers venture away from the rocks and fish slightly offshore we'll see more fish come to the dock. Halibut fishing is solid as usual in water depths from 170 - 230 feet. It was definitely a Halibut day today with some of the larger variety coming to the boat. Paul Gibson boated a 53 pounder with guide Terry Laboucane and Jeff Smirfitt guided Tracy Marquis to a fat 60 pounder. The big flattie of the day, however, was an 86 pound specimen in Jason Drury's boat. Well done guys! The fish of the trip so far has to be a beautiful big Tyee that QCL guide Kevin Clough taped out to 41 pounds before it was released by guest Peter Streith. Kudos to Peter for choosing to let that big fish swim away! He'll receive a personalized copy of our special Catch & Release book, "Thrill of the Catch", including a series of great shots that Shooter captured of the catch and the release itself. Cut plug herring and anchovies with teaser heads are still producing best for Chinook while the Coho will hit almost anything. The new moon on Thursday means big tide changes right now with lots of moving water so the slack times are fairly short. The weather through the weekend is predicted to be mainly south to southwest winds so we'll enjoy flat seas combined with some of that liquid sunshine we're so famous for! |
