The summer's largest salmon landed on Sunday!

As we lead up to our annual big derby of the summer – newly dubbed the Queen Charlotte Lodge Kingfisher Derby (coming up next weekend) – the big fish are showing up on time.  The big fish record for this season jumped up a few notches yesterday when Gary Onn & Jon Gilbert arrived at the dock.  Fishing weighted rods along the kelp at Bird Rock 2, Gary’s rod showed the telltale tap tap on the inside turn.  He picked up, double-checked and set the hook.  Luckily the Chinook headed out to sea rather than into the kelp and Jon steered the boat out of the bay.  After about a twenty minute tug-of-war it came time to net the fish and after a couple of attempts the giant was headed into the mesh.  Gary had to drop the rod and come to Jon’s aid as the big Chinook barely fit into the net.  Together they grabbed the hoop and lifted the exhausted salmon into the boat.  That’s when they realized that this was no ordinary Tyee.  Arriving at the dock the crowd gathered round as the fish was hung on the scale.  68 pounds was the official weight and Gary Onn became the newest member of the Kingfisher Club, ringing the Tyee Bell 6 times.  Congratulations guys on a most successful fishing effort!
